RIP DMOZ, Long live DMOZ

Last updated: 11.58am, Friday 31st March 2017 by

In a shock move, DMOZ, the famous Open Directory Project - loved by SEO gurus - has been shut down by its owner AOL.

AOL acquired the DMOZ directly with the acquisition of Netscape in 1998. On February 28, 2017, AOL posted an announcement about the upcoming closing of the site without providing a reason.

However it lives on in the form of DMOZLive.com by Midnight Design Productions.

"The reason we are keeping the DMOZ Internet Directory alive at DMOZLive.com is that we believe the Internet community can still derive value from its content," according to Founder Douglas Olsen. "It is also a piece of Internet history worth preserving."
